While the reclusive Newbury continues to write and record sporadically, his early work (back in print via a recent box set retrospective on the Mountain Retreat label) serves to inspire younger generations of fans and musicians. Peter Blackstock, co-editor of No Depression magazine, had the idea to re-record the "Frisco Mabel Joy" album, song by song, using a broad spectrum of musicians including "alt.country"/Americana mainstays like Dave Alvin, David Halley, Chuck Prophet, and The Walkabouts, avant pop singer Robin Holcomb, jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, Newbury's Nashville-era contemporary Kris Kristofferson, Midnight Choir (a Norwegian band that tackles "An American Trilogy"), and a delirious assemblage called The Hole Dozen that includes members of the Silos, the Gourds, the Old 97s, former Jayhawk Mark Olson and his wife Victoria Williams, and miscellaneous other players under the loose supervision of veteran singer-songwriter (and Bob Dylan's longtime confidante) Bob Neuwirth.
